The Fraunhofer Institute is researching different stages of the hydrogen value chain at several locations, from production to applications in transport and industry.

A Noordtec compressor system is being used at the H₂ facility in Görlitz for research involving tube storage systems. It compresses hydrogen from an inlet pressure of between 16 and 30 bar to a pressure of up to 250 bar and supplies it to the designated tube storage systems.

The storage systems contain deliberately introduced material modifications at selected points, such as notches. During the tests, the systems are repeatedly pressurised and depressurised. This allows the resulting stress and material fatigue to be investigated.

The research is intended to provide information for the further development and assessment of hydrogen storage systems.

Hydrogen can be used as an energy carrier in different applications. Its greenhouse gas balance depends on factors including how it is produced, transported and used.
